Upware North Pit

Picture
The Pit is the original lime quarry that predates the Quarry on the Stretham Road.  The site is designated as SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) for the original population of Water Germander from which the Kingfisher Bridge population has spread.  The site is managed by Kingfishers Bridge but does not belong to us and is unfortunately not public access.  We have recently carried out alot of work to clear the rank growth of thorn and willow bringing the overall scrub height down and allowing more light to reach the Water Germander beds.  This work will also allow the Kingfishers Bridge Ringing group to monitor the bird population using the SSSI more readily.
