Highlights today were a pair of Curlew, several singing Chiffchaffs and the first Blackcap of the year. Spring has sprung!
The highlight was a Great White Egret again and the first singing Chiffchaff.
Highlight today was my first Avocets of the year, and despite the wind more and more of the passerines are singing now (the sun was out for most of the morning).
I only counted from the hide due to the wind increasing to 40-45 mph.
May be its a bit premature but a Lapwing was nest scraping and Redshank displaying but the bird I enjoyed most was a Yellowhammer at the feeders. A bird I see so few of these days; a bad reflection on the state of our farmland birds!
Neither Graeme nor I were able to do a count last week but I managed a couple of hours from the hide on March 2nd from 16.30. There were 246 Lapwing, some of which were displaying before dusk and at least 4 Redshank displaying. 77 Whooper Swans flew in to roost at 17.15 and at 17.30 a Bittern flew into the reedbed. For the last hour 5 Marsh Harriers (1 male) flew round the reedbed before dropping in to roost. 52 Shoveler were feeding on the lake.
